Running: Get Excited to Exercise

While many people are using their newly found time indoors to work on projects around the house, it’s also a great time to get active! That being said, it’s still important to practice social distancing, and one of the best exercises for that is running.
Running is a great activity to do by yourself, and it can help relieve stress during this quarantine chaos. Getting outside will also give you a nice break from being stuck in your house.
Sophomore kinesiology major Jack Reimer has been on the University of Maryland’s Club Running team since he was a freshman. Running is something he’s always enjoyed and had a passion for.
“Running by yourself is great because exercise like that makes you a lot happier and sometimes it’s nice to get away from all of your devices for a little while. It also makes you feel healthier which is important in quarantine,” Reimer said.
An article by Harvard's Medical School also embraces the idea that running, even in very small amounts, is enough to increase cardiovascular health and bring about mood-elevating feelings.
In Baltimore County, Hereford High School’s cross country coach John Roemer IV is in his 42nd year of running every day. He averages around 5 miles a day and still has not lost his love for this activity.
“I love running because I can explore for the price of a pair of shoes. My perception of parks, neighborhoods, and city streets differ if I’m on foot versus on a bike or in a car,” Roemer said.
Marci Benda, a physical therapist at Lifestrength in Towson, stressed that when it comes to exercising, you should find something that you love.
“Exercise is something that you enjoy doing, and not a chore,” Benda said.
It is important to remain realistic about your limits. If you’re just starting out with exercise, Benda recommends working out twice a week for 30 to 40 minutes, and to increase activity by no more than 10% a week in order to prevent injury.
While running isn’t for everyone, taking a walk is something you can also enjoy by yourself. Refresh your quarantine routine and get active!
