Fall 2020 Fashion Month Review

With fall 2020 fashion month behind us, it’s time to look back on the designers and trends that dominated the runways in New York, Paris, London and Milan.

One brand that stepped outside of the box was designer Jeremy Scott’s Moschino, who unveiled a collection of Marie Antoinette inspired looks. Scott’s French Rococo looks included hoop skirts as wide as the runway, pastel leather jackets and even a four-tier cake dress, bringing opulence to a whole new level.

“The cake-based finale that was served in several gut-busting courses was hilarious and provided total visual satiety,” said Vogue reporter Luke Leitch.

Jil Sander’s new collection took the opposite route to opulence, creating a neutral-based yet trendy collection. With the collection containing pieces in mostly black and cream colors, the focus was all on the meticulous crafting that went into each piece. Power blazers, leather boots and fringed dresses were the stars of the show in Sander’s collection.

Another brand that shone was Rodarte. Helmed by sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy, Rodarte took us back in time as it introduced a 1940s inspired collection. Reminiscent of fashion from the World War II era, puffed sleeves, gloves, and netted headpieces were used in many of the looks. The show also contained many gothic influences, with its use of blood red and deep black colors.

As spring is arriving and everyone is looking forward to warmer weather, green shades have popped up in several collections. Italian streetwear brand GCDS took on this trend, sending models strutting down the runway in neon green boots and handbags. Chanel utilized the green trend as well, giving a mint green makeover to their iconic suits.

Another popular trend seen across the runways is fringe. Cowboy fashion, a trend based on the style of western cowboys such as denim and fringe, has been back in style for quite some time. It’s no surprise that we are seeing fringe appear in both men and women’s collections.

There were multiple ways designers used the fringe trend. Designer Gabriela Hearst covered a tan suede coat in fringe, while Christian Dior debuted several looks covered in fringe. Prada took an unconventional approach, using beaded fringe for epaulettes.

Fringe is not the only piece of cowboy fashion that is coming back into style. Denim, although always a staple piece, was seen on the runways at many of the men’s shows, such as at Dsquared2’s show.

Last year, celebrities like Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet brought harnesses into fashion. This year, we turn to women’s fashion for harnesses.

Gucci hopped on the harness trend, contrasting a black harness with a floral lace dress. Japanese designer Junya Watanabe gave the trend a punk rock twist, pairing a knee-length cutout harness with a striking red dress and cheetah print shoes.

Though fashion month doesn’t make a stop in College Park, some UMD students still look to see what trends are popping up on the runways of their favorite brands.

Katherine Riggs, freshman government and politics and communications double major would love to attend a Chanel show because she sees their designs as “timeless and really important.”

Freshman journalism major Mira Varghese has loved fashion since she was a freshman in high school. Instead of Chanel like Riggs, Varghese would pick a Louis Vuitton show to attend.

As for the trends Varghese sees coming back into style? “Tie dye, denim and cropped pants,” she said.

Over the course of fashion month, many talented designers came together to show off new trends and collections. As the month has come to a close, it’s time now to look forward to what these designers will be creating for their spring 2021 collections.
