The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines Autism Spectrum Disorder as “a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.” A cure has not yet been found, but research shows that early treatment services can help children learn vital skills, according to the CDC. Every year, April symbolizes National Autism Awareness Month.
This April, blue lights have radiated throughout Fraternity Row, and Playa Bowls introduced the “Autism Speaks bowl,” where a percentage of the proceeds are being donated to the organization Autism Speaks. According to the organization's website, Autism Speaks is “dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families” by providing support and raising awareness for autism.
There are many ways for college students at the University of Maryland to get involved and raise awareness for autism, both on and off campus. With only a short, 30-minute drive from campus, students can attend the Autism Speaks Walk in Washington. As a grand fundraising event, this walk emphasizes the importance and power of a unified community and unconditional support. This year, the walk will take place on Oct. 5, 2019.
“I started going to the walk a couple years ago. It’s such an important cause that deserves to be recognized and supported, and I want to raise awareness as much as I can,” said Mary Price Suter, a freshman letters and sciences major.
Alpha Xi Delta, a sorority at UMD, hosts philanthropy events throughout the school year and donates the proceeds to Autism Speaks. They had their “Step It Up 5K! Color Run” on April 14 on Fraternity Row. With a $10 registration fee, participants were able to participate in the 5K to raise awareness for the cause while also being able to take part in games and a silent auction. The proceeds raised during this event, and all of their other philanthropy events, are donated to the Autism Speaks organization.
If you want to attend one of Alpha Xi Delta’s future philanthropy events to help donate, all you have to do is venmo a member of the sorority. In the fall, the sorority hosts “Xiti With The Xi’s,” which provides a baked ziti dinner to those who purchase a ticket. They also take donations throughout the year.
According to the CDC, around 1 in 59 children were diagnosed with autism in 2018. The month of April raises awareness and helps educate the public about autism. It is our job, as a community, to continue raising awareness and funding research until April comes again next year.
