‘Tis the season of midterms, leaving us students yearning for the return of warm weather and simple times. Lucky for us, spring is finally here … and so is Washington, D.C. Make the most of your spring season with a trip (or ten) to this pretty city.
Having grown up just 40 minutes outside of D.C., day trips to the historical city have always been a typical weekend affair. I pretty much have D.C. down to a science. Springtime calls for fresh, flavorful foods and time outdoors, both of which D.C has to offer. Keep your springtime blooming with the following D.C. spring essentials:
Union Market
Food first, because who wants to spend the day outdoors on an empty stomach? If you’re looking for a spot that encapsulates the exuberant energy of the city, culinary expertise, and an abundance of diverse cultures, look no further than Union Market.
The food options are limitless, ranging from fresh caught sushi to scrumptious Italian cuisine. The aesthetic outdoor area invites you to eat and mingle as you soak in the beautiful spring weather. Aside from the food, Union Market also serves as a cultural coalescence, offering unique art, music and events.
“I went to Union Market with friends with the intention of getting breakfast, but it was so much more than that,” said Pennsylvania State University sophomore business major Emma Buch. “There was music, art, and shopping… we stayed for hours!”
Buch lives close to D.C. and visits regularly during spring, summer, and winter break.
Conveniently located close to the Capital, Union Market is the perfect place to go before visiting the monuments, which is always a necessity.
The Monuments
I know what you’re thinking, but I promise, visiting the monuments is far from boring… especially on a vibrant spring day! We often take for granted the fact that we live minutes away from one of the most historically significant cities in the nation. From the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, it is important to familiarize yourself with these historic landmarks. Head over to the National Mall, where you can explore the many noteworthy monuments; consider packing lunch for a picnic on the Mall! This is a perfect way to save money and take in the vivacious atmosphere.
Cherry Blossom Festival
The National Cherry Blossom Festival in D.C. is nothing short of breathtaking. The annual festival marks the full-bloom phase of the plethora of cherry blossom trees surrounding D.C.’s Tidal Basin. The sensational trees surround the monuments, making for a spectacular sight.
“I have heard so much about the cherry blossoms and I can’t wait to finally see them! Because I live far away, I just recently took my first trip to D.C.. I plan on going all the time this Spring… especially for the cherry blossoms,” said freshman Danielle Yanoff of Massachusetts.
The festival draws in massive crowds of locals and tourists, so I suggest checking it out in the early morning or early evening when it is less hectic. Although the period of full-bloom alters slightly each year, the festival usually takes place during the first week of April. And, of course, be prepared for the endless photo-ops!
The Hirshhorn Museum
Perhaps it’s time to cool off indoors. As you are probably aware, D.C. is known for its myriad of diverse museums. From the National Air and Space Museum to the United States Botanic Garden, the options are limitless. Prepare to be mind blown by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. This museum of modern art displays pioneering art exhibits that break all boundaries. The art featured employs various forms of media, anywhere from painting to the use of light and space. Some of the exhibits even offer bold commentary that will leave you inspired and awestruck.
Meridian Hill Park
As you have probably noticed by now, D.C. offers endless outdoor adventures for the springtime. With that in mind, Meridian Hill Park is an architectural marvel. This exquisitely constructed park surrounded by lush greenery and a descending fountain is fascinating. The urban park sits in D.C.’s Columbia Heights, just a short drive from the National Mall. This is the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring the city.
Clear your calendars, because spring is here and D.C. is waiting for you! Take advantage of the fact that we are minutes away from some of the nation’s most acclaimed parks, museums, restaurants and monuments. Experience a day full of adventure, culture, and, of course, mouthwatering treats, with a trip to our nation’s capital.
