Moisturizing Tips and Tricks for the Fall Semester

School is back in session and the time has come, once again, for us to bid farewell to the sweltering temperatures of the summer and say hello to the cooler and crisp autumn weather. As the seasons change, there are some adjustments that are easy to make, like trading in sandals and sundresses for boots and warm cardigans. Then, there’s your skincare routine, which may require more or less attention and a different set of practices for the upcoming cold months, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin. But there’s no need to give in to the struggle. Here’s a simple routine and a series of tips you can use to keep your skin healthy and moisturized all season long.
Cleansing
For those with skin that is prone to dryness, retaining hydration and moisture should play a key role in both your morning and nighttime routines, starting right from the beginning with cleansing. There are a plethora of cleansers, but the best for combating dryness and re-hydrating your skin are gentle, non-drying cleansers, such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser or Murad Soothing Gel Cleanser. Be on the lookout for products that include glycerin as an ingredient, since it’s an emollient that can attract and lock in moisture.
When washing your face, whether you use your bare hands, a cloth or a brush, avoid using an excessive amount of product. Use just enough to thoroughly clear your face of dirt and oils. Then, once you’re done, gently pat your face dry (or allow it to air dry) and proceed to the next step.
Tip: Be sure to wash your face with lukewarm water rather than hot water, which could remove your natural oils and actually increase the level of dryness in your skin. This also goes for baths and showers.
Toning
When it comes to dry and sensitive skin, toning is not always a necessary step. Because the main goal is lock in as much moisture as possible, it’s highly recommended that you moisturize immediately after drying your face. But, in the case of diminishing problematic dark marks or hyperpigmentation, hydrating toners such as Aloe Vera Gel or Mario Badescu facial sprays are acceptable exceptions.
Moisturization
Finally, after fully washing and drying your face (and applying any toners, if needed), seal everything with a trusted moisturizer. During the summer, you might have used a lightweight product considering the heat and humidity. But as the temperatures begin to drop, it’s best that you transition toward moisturizers with thicker consistencies, like CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, Nivea Moisturizing Creme or Garnier SkinActive Hydrating 3-in-1 Face Moisturizer with Aloe. If you’re looking for thick products with natural ingredients, consider using shea or cocoa butter.
Rub a generous dose of moisturizer onto your face as soon as your cleansing and toning regimen is complete to finish off your simple autumn skincare routine.
Tip: Apply moisturizer generously throughout the day, not only in the morning and at night.
While being consistent with a routine is likely to keep your skin from developing dry patches or tightening this season, consider using some additional tricks, such as using a humidifier in your room at night and avoiding alcohol-containing makeup removers and other dry, irritating products that could be damaging to your skin. Also, drink water – lots of water.
Fall may appear to be a daunting time for skincare, but if you take these tips and tricks into account, your skin should feel moisturized and free of excessive dryness regardless of the impending cold.
