How to Stay Fit Over Spring Break (When All You Want To Do is Sleep)
Cancun, Puerto Rico, Florida, your best friend’s couch, or home, no matter where you stay, you are going to want to fall into the temptation of sleeping in, gorging on food and drinks, and overall giving up on your New Year’s resolutions to stay healthy.
Spring break is time for sleep, we all know that. The pull to stay up late and sleep in is incredibly tempting, especially when you just had a week of stressful midterms, but what if you want to stay active and healthy, or as healthy as you can be as a college student? There are a few ways you can go about it.
Online workout videos can be a lifesaver. There are hundreds upon hundreds of videos out there that can pertain to anything you want. This is the haven that will keep you up and active, even when you really don’t want to be.
If your main goal is to just keep your body moving and not stay slumped on your parent's’ couch all week, yoga videos can be extremely helpful. Yoga With Adriene on YouTube has different videos that can pertain to any goal you’re striving for, such as weight loss, strength, lengthening, or anything else you can think of. They usually last around a half hour and are a great way to start or end your day, no matter when you wake up or fall asleep.
Staying on the topic of YouTube, Blogilates and other fitness YouTubers have a lot of videos that are a higher intensity than yoga if you are looking for something more along the lines of HIIT cardio or toning exercises. That might sound daunting, but something that’s great about Blogilates is that the videos are really short and you can do them as many times as you want, be it once, which usually ranges around five minutes, or 20 times (but I think we all know that won’t happen).
Another quick way to stay active and healthy during spring break is to look up fitness on Instagram. On the discover page you can find trainers that post short tutorials on the workouts they do at home or at the gym. If you can muster up the courage to go to the gym, just screenshot the description which usually has set instructions. Or you can just watch the super-fit women and men and get guilted into working out. Either way works.
But perhaps the simplest way to stay active during break is to go on walks. Grab your mom, dad, cousin, brother, sister, dog, neighbor’s dog, or just your headphones and take a brisk walk around your neighborhood. Sometimes, the simplest thing can make the biggest difference, especially if you have been a living corpse on the couch for three days straight.
Whichever way you choose, know that although staying active is important, you can always allot yourself time to rest and recover. Just don’t gorge yourself on unhealthy foods and you won’t have to feel guilty about watching all of Stranger Things in one day.
