Hair and Space, a blow-dry and beauty bar, opened in College Park on October 27, and has set the bar high for other hair salons.
Hair and Space offers services including blowouts, scalp scrubs, deep conditioning, braids, updos and trims.
Laura Abitbol, a sophomore communications and psychology double major, first heard about Hair and Space through a friend, and it has now become part of her weekly routine.
“I’ve probably gone 10 to 15 times already [this semester],” Abitbol said.
Abitbol said that Hair and Space charges less to blow dry and straighten her hair than hair salons she’s previously gone to.
“I have really big, curly hair and not a lot of people want to do it for the regular price,” Abitbol said.
Reyna Bergman, a sophomore communications major, said she heard about Hair and Space through social media, and although she’s only gone once, she is waiting for an excuse to go again.
“I loved it, it’s such a happy environment and people are really nice,” Bergman said.

“Stellar stylist” Aienya Brown, who has been working at Hair and Space for several months now, wants the girls of College Park to know the ways in which it was created specifically for Terps.
“This place was put here for you guys,” Brown said, explaining that the owner of Hair and Space, Regina Holbert, was also a Terp.
Hair and Space caters to different events and holidays to accommodate Terps, offering discounts and extra beauty services for big events. For example, the beauty salon offers discounts on "Turf Tuesdays,” a popular discounted night at a local bar.
When Holbert graduated from the University of Maryland, she knew that she wanted to open a beauty and blowout bar specifically in College Park because, when she was a student, she had to leave College Park to get her hair done, Brown said, adding that Holbert would sometimes travel to Washington, D.C.
“She just wants to make every woman glow,” Brown said, in reference to Holbert.
The neon yellow “You Glow Girl” sign, accompanied by the yellow walls, grey seats and iconic galaxy-painted wall, complete the vibe of the salon. The trendy pictures hung around the room and pop music coming from every corner create a bubbly, energetic and fun environment.
In the future, Hair and Space hopes to do more “pop-ups” and include other beauty treatments, such as makeup and waxing. Brown said that this was the original intention behind the “space” in Hair and Space.
For Valentine’s Day, Hair and Space had a makeup pop-up in the salon, where girls could get their makeup done. Brown hopes to continue doing events like these in the future.
“I really dont think there's any place in College Park better,” Bergman said.
