As formals fill up the social schedule for the next few weeks, many people are looking for beauty tips and tricks. I spoke to three University of Maryland students with interests in makeup to see what the best products are, where to get them and how to make your look picture perfect.
Amanda Levin and Madeleine O’Connell are two freshmen who have been doing their friends’ makeup and hair for formals for the past few weeks.
“I was always interested in makeup because it is definitely a confidence booster,” O’Connell said.
“I’m a creative person, makeup allows me to express my creativity,” Levin said.
Both girls have done makeup for their friends in the past, and they say they get most of their practice from getting ready to go out on weekends.
“Everything I learned is from trial and error and YouTube,” Levin said.
In terms of their favorite products, both recommended colorful eyeshadow palettes that have enough colors for you to experiment with.
O’Connell suggested a Morphe set, and Levin added that Jaclyn Hill’s palette is one of her favorites.

Next, I talked to Joanie Burzymowska, a UMD senior. On her Instagram, @beautybyjoanie_b, Burzymowska posts some of her favorite looks.
Burzymowska gets most of her inspiration from YouTube figure Jeffree Star and uses his line of products, Jeffree Star Cosmetics.
“I actually met Jeffree while he was on tour, and he was extremely kind,” Burzymowska said. “Now he has millions of followers and it’s incredibly inspiring to see his growth as a person and artist!”
Burzymowska said that she has too many favorite products to count, but that she gets most of her products from Sephora and Ulta. She recommended brands like Anastasia Beverly Hills and Urban Decay.

Although the girls recommended different products, there was one thing they could all agree on: a love for YouTube star James Charles.
Charles is known for creating “more out-there looks,” Burzymowska said.
“He’s not afraid to try new products,” Levin added.
Charles is gaining popularity on YouTube for his vlogs with other public figures, rather than just his makeup work.
“His videos are so entertaining!” O’Connell said.
Based on the tips these women suggested, it seems like the best way to get started with makeup is to watch YouTube tutorials and keep experimenting!
