Sister, Sister: The Hadids

There’s no question Bella and Gigi Hadid are taking the fashion world by storm. The dynamic duo take on the hottest runways, like Anna Sui and Tommy Hilfiger, and wear the coolest clothes from up-and-coming. As close as they may be, and as many items of clothing they may share, there are definite differences in both their fashion and street styles.

Gigi, the older and sometimes more well known sister, jumped into headlines after her strut down the runway in the 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Her adult career actually started in 2011 when she signed with IMG Models and moved to New York in 2013 to study at the New School - her career jetted from there. Gigi’s style is much brighter than her sister’s. She loves denim and cropped tops. She has also taken to “matching,” which is when you coordinate your shoes and other accessories to the rest of your outfit.

Bella, the younger the of two, began modeling when she was 16 years old and by 18 was booking major shows and campaigns. She also signed a contract with IMG Models in 2014. In 2016, she was named Models.com’s Woman Model of the Year. She’s one of the style icons for the latest trends, but Bella’s style is a little different from her sister’s. This Hadid has an edgier street style. She loves monochromatic outfits, especially all black or all white.

All of Gigi’s go-to style points are featured in this outfit from June 29, 2017. Her matching comes out in full swing with this look. Her ever-so-slightly-cropped red shirt perfectly complements both her shoes and her lips. She also is rocking a canadian tuxedo – jeans and a denim jacket – a trend coming back in style from the 90s.

Sometimes Bella will break up the simple black and white with a pop of color or tone it down with a some sheer, neutral tones. Though her typical look is dark, on August 28 she sported a casual summer outfit. The nude bodysuit is a bold move because though it’s a neutral color, it strays away from the natural instinct to wear grayscale tones with denim.

With these two looks – especially the slicked back hair – it’s easy to see the sisters definitely have the same fashion sense, but execute their ideas differently. While Gigi’s outfit was more “out there,” Bella takes a casual outfit and dresses it up with the right shoes and chunky necklace. Bella’s look would fit in perfectly with Gigi’s wardrobe, and vice versa. Either sister could have made these looks incredible. With these two looks – especially the slicked back hair – it’s easy to see the sisters definitely have the same fashion sense, but execute their ideas differently. On May 11, Bella took note from her sister and showed off her slim body in a black crop top paired with a furry cardigan. This time she kept her look dark and mysterious with jet black hair and plaid pants tucked into black combat boots.

In between New York Fashion Week shows, Gigi rocked a hot pink jumpsuit on September 7, to walk the streets of NYC. The bold color is typical of Gigi, who loves making a statement with neon-colored monochromatic outfits. Hats off to anyone who can take on this look (with green shoes, I might add!)

Here, the girls are repping completely different street styles. Bella’s outfit is shows off her grunge side. Even in the midst of spring she’s strutting around in her darkest black. Gigi’s outfit, on the other hand, is totally on point with the rest of her colorful attire.

Off the streets and on the runways, the sisters usually take on different campaigns. Right now, one of Gigi’s biggest campaigns is with Maybelline, a cosmetics company. She’s created her own collection of products and models them it herself. Designer-wise, Gigi frequently partners with Tommy Hilfiger, and has designed collections with him since 2016.

On the flip side, Bella is working with Nike on their Air Force One sneaker collection. She was also named Dior’s makeup ambassador in 2016 and works with them to create beauty video content for Dior’s website.

The models have walked in the same shows in the past, but they definitely walk to their own (style) beat. Strutting through the streets is a breeze when you have the confidence (and clothes) these two do. These women don’t always share fashion opinions, but they totally steal each other’s clothes when needed...they are sisters after all.
