Hell in a (Bomb)Shell: Your Guide to Game Day Outfits

Football season is in full swing here at UMD, and arguably the only thing more exciting than game day itself is picking out a game day outfit. The best way to show school spirit is through tailgate fashion. Here are different, Testudo-approved outfit ideas to spice up your Maryland apparel. Go Terps!

There are so many places to find game day gear other than the bookstore. These typically include unique online shops. Tailgate Tees by Gabby has everything from halter tanks to lace-up, cropped sweatshirts to cheerleader skirts. Two of her most creative and popular products are the full zip half and half t-shirt and chokers.

If you love graphic designs and tees, Medicated Housewife is your shop, where their motto is “NOT your mother’s tailgating apparel.” Their products will make any tailgate fun with their “groovy bear” designs and fun slogans like “Tailgate Made Me Do It.” They even use common designs ranging from the famous Rolling Stones tongue to a grocery store “Thank You” bag and customize it to your school. Check out all of Medicated Housewife’s Maryland apparel here!

Tailgate Tailored also offers a large variety of sweatshirts, t-shirts, and flannels, but with their own personal twist. She makes stylish flannels with a patch of your school on the back. Some other trendy products include feminine t-shirts with lace detailing where the deep-v cutout is! I also love this studded sweatshirt, which you can personalize for Maryland. It’s perfect for those cold fall games. Tailgate Tailored also makes these custom bracelets to show off your Terp pride all year round!

All of these online sites also have Instagram accounts that you can follow to get game day outfit inspiration. You may even get a shout-out!

As college students, many of us are on a budget, and buying something from the sites above for every game can add up quickly. So, if you are looking for inexpensive ways to transform your plain t-shirt or sweatshirt, there are so many DIY tutorials online. Check out Pinterest, YouTube and even Cosmopolitan for step-by-step directions on how to cut your tops. Grab some scissors and your friends and get pumped for the game!

Now that you have all your apparel, it’s time to style it!

For warmer weather, be comfortable in the sun with lace up tank tops and halter-tops. Acid wash shirts and braided roped backs are very popular choices this year. Another trendy option is to wear a Terps bandeau or crop top under short jean overalls. Who doesn’t love to bring the ‘90s back? Don’t forget to pair your choice with your favorite UMD socks and red or black converse.

If you are feeling particularly festive one game, try channeling your inner cheerleader. Cheerleader skirts can be worn with UMD themed bandeaus, like this one for the hotter games, and even a cropped sweatshirt for when it starts to get colder. You can also buy an oversized jersey and wear it as a dress. Pair it with under eye stickers and you’ll be the cutest player on the team.

For when it starts to get slightly colder, tees and cropped long sleeves can be paired with ripped jeans. It is also popular to rock an open black and red flannel, which you can always tie around your waist and still look cute during the awkward transitional weather. For November tailgates, you can still show your Terp pride through knit hats and knit headbands!

If you don’t feel like being decked out in Maryland gear (or ran out of shirts to wear), a simple red t-shirt or sweater can be pepped up with different accessories. You can never go wrong with a bow, especially because it will make your ponytail look 10x cuter! The bookstore also sells a variety of temporary tattoos, headbands, hats, and scarves that will have you representing our school colors and mascot.

With the biggest games of the season coming up, I can’t wait to see what you will wear to show off your school spirit!
